The Chia Company is a private wholly owned and operated Western Australian Company. Our origins and expertise stem from generations of farming in particular, growing grains and seeds for use as food ingredients. Not only do we grow Chia but manufacture, distribute and market black and white Chia seed branded as Chiatah in Australia and around the world.

Our interest in Chia was sparked by an American television documentary in 2000 on the grains that formed part of diets of ancient civilisations. The following year whilst in America on an international research expedition to keep abreast of food industry trends, one of our Directors, John Foss, took the opportunity to further investigate Chia. He was intrigued by the host of nutritious benefits offered by Chia, especially Omega 3 alpha linolenic acid, and imported the seed for use as a food ingredient in Australian products.

The response from Australian food manufacturers was overwhelmingly positive. However Chia was only available by import in small quantities and of varying quality. A consistent highly quality supply had to be available before Chia could be accepted in the Australian food industry.

Knowing that to grow high quality Chia required a location in a specific latitude, a hot climate and a reliable water source, John set out to find the ideal region in which to grow a crop, soon settling on the pristine Ord River Valley in Kununurra, Western Australia.

After several very successful growing trials that produced exceptionally high quality Chia, The Chia Company was formally established by John and two Kununurra local farmers Robert Boshammer and Timothy Croot. At this point they began growing Chia on a commercial scale and developed the Chiatah brand. From humble beginnings the rest as they say, is history!
