Clear Mountain Organic Rooibos Tea is made from the Aspalathus linearis plant that grows exclusively in the Cedarberg mountains in the Western Cape of South Africa. Rooibos Tea, well known as a refreshing beverage, has traditionally been used for its health benefits. The locals of the area first discovered that the fine needle-like leaves of the Rooibos plant made a tasty aromatic tea. In 1904 a Russian immigrant, Benjamin Ginsberg, became interested in Rooibos and realised its marketing potential. By 1930, Dr P le Fras Nortier, a medical doctor and nature lover, discovered the real value of Rooibos as an agricultural and medicinal product. Due to his enthusiasm, other farmers became interested in the cultivation of Rooibos and production soon started.

Rooibos Tea is naturally free from caffeine and is therefore not subjected to a decaffeinating process. Being caffeine-free and it has a soothing effect on the central nervous system – recommended for people suffering from headaches, insomnia, nervous strain and hypertension

The tannins found in black tea are known to bind with minerals such as iron and manganese in the digestive system, reducing the body’s absorption of these minerals. Rooibos Tea is naturally low in tannins and does not significantly affect mineral absorption. This is particularly important during pregnancy when it is recommended that women avoid beverages high in tannins, which reduce the uptake of essential dietary minerals such as iron.

Rooibos Tea is a natural source of antioxidants. Antioxidants protect our body cells and tissues against free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable molecules that cause damage to body cells and tissues as found with the ageing process, exposure to sunlight, pollution and cigarette smoke.

Rooibos Tea has been shown to contain Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) mimetic substances, which are known to benefit skin health. SOD is the one of body’s most important antioxidant enzymes, protecting it against superoxide free radicals and oxidative damage associated with the ageing process and wrinkling.
